Chapter One
“Abriella!” I can remember my mother calling, around my fifth birthday. “Go away from the rail! You will fall in! Don’t you want to see Father?”
As disobedient as I was, I loved my Father and left the only thing that stood between the sea and me. As if she knew I would not stay there for long, she took my hand and held it gently, but firmly. We were only on deck for a small amount of time, then it was back to the tween deck for hours and hours. If it was a gentler day at sea, Mother would write letters that could not be mailed till we stopped for food, water or more passengers. If she was not writing letters, she was scribbling in her diary, reading a book, sewing, learning English or simply talking to the other women. On rockier days she ignored all human life except for me. She’d hold me in her lap and sing or hum while I played, slept or whimpered. However, if it was not storming or rocky, I would be off finding new playmates, watching the older men play chess or simply exploring the little world I was rarely allowed to leave. Sometimes it took Mother an hour to find me and nestle me down for my unwanted nap. If it took her longer than that she would begin to panic and worry and think of the worst possible outcome. Always it was that I had fallen overboard. That never happened though, but I was often curious about the rail and the sea, which was why Mother hastened for fresh air and then to get back below, where I was safer. It disappointed me that the older children, who might as well have been adults, could run and jump on deck and peer over the untouchable rail into that glassy floor of greenish blue. I never saw anything, since I barely got close enough to sneak a look at that beautiful floor, but there were reports of mermaids and silver, sparkling fish. How I wished I could have seen them! But Mother’s cautious, worrisome figure always stopped me and took my hand and led me away. Making me long ever so more to see into the secrets of that beautiful floor.
